Indispensable for communicating spaces at different levels, stairs are architectural elements that have been present throughout history. Sometimes they can be whimsical structures, sometimes they can take center stage in the building, sometimes they are for evacuation purposes, etc.
By definition, “a staircase is an architectural element formed by steps whose function is to join, or communicate, spaces at different heights”.
For this purpose, it must comply with certain dimensions, so that it is comfortable and accessible to use. These dimensions must comply with minimum widths, height and step tread. It can have a plateau, a split plateau, a single-span plateau, etc.
There are different types of stairs: straight, curved, mixed. In today’s architecture, the one flight staircase is quite common, which in some cases is cantilevered, that is to say, the steps are anchored to one side, leaving the cantilevered step. It can also be hung from the ceiling or from the upper section with a row of metal turnbuckles. Double treads are a very common resource. We can give it a double tread: above and below.
The final aesthetics admits many configurations: industrial, elegant, warm, noble materials, zenithal or step lighting, modern or classic, etc.
